AT A GLANCE
🌿 KODASSERY GRAMA PANCHAYAT
Kodassery Grama Panchayat, located in Chalakudy Taluk and Chalakudy Block of Thrissur District, is a beautiful hilly region comprising the villages of Elinjipra, Kodassery and Kuttichira.
The unique identity of Kodassery has been shaped by the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, the beauty of its mountain slopes, its agricultural heritage and its rich history.
🏛️ HISTORY OF FORMATION
Kodassery Panchayat was formed by separating the Elinjipra and Kodassery villages from the erstwhile Pariyaram Panchayat, which comprised the three villages of Pariyaram, Elinjipra and Kodassery.
From 1962 to December 1963, the Panchayat was administered under a Special Officer.
📅 JANUARY 1, 1964
The first Administrative Committee of Kodassery Grama Panchayat assumed charge.
This marked the beginning of a new official chapter in the local administrative history of Kodassery.
🚋 MEMORIES OF THE FORGOTTEN TRAMWAY
Even before the formation of Kodassery Panchayat, a historic transportation route had passed through this region.
During the period of the Cochin Kings, a tramway line was established to transport timber, firewood and other forest resources from the eastern hill ranges to Chalakudy.
The railway/tramway system, which extended up to Parambikulam, remains an important part of the historical heritage and memories of Kodassery.
⛰️ IN THE LAP OF THE MOUNTAINS
Kodassery is a beautiful geographical region situated between Kodassery Mala and the Western Ghats, to the east of Chalakudy Municipality.
The northern and eastern boundaries of the Panchayat are bordered by mountain ranges.
The terrain of the Panchayat is predominantly a southward-sloping mountainous landscape.
Only a small portion consists of hilly terrain, while most of the area comprises sloping plains and gently undulating land.
🌾 THE GOLDEN ERA OF PADDY CULTIVATION
There was a time when a major portion of the plains of Kodassery was richly cultivated with paddy.
Kodassery Panchayat achieved significant progress in rice production during this period.
When water was readily available from the Chalakudy Right Bank Canal, which began functioning in 1952, paddy cultivation witnessed considerable growth.
Although agricultural prosperity declined with changing times, the deep connection of the people of Kodassery with the land and agriculture continues to remain an important part of the region's cultural heritage.
