Kodassery
Kodassery Grama Panchayat is a hilly region located in Chalakudy Taluk and Chalakudy Block of Thrissur District, comprising the villages of Elinjipra, Kodassery, and Kuttichira. There are 5 Scheduled Caste colonies and 3 Scheduled Tribe colonies in this Panchayat.
Kodassery Panchayat was formed by separating the villages of Elinjipra and Kodassery from Pariyaram Panchayat, which previously consisted of the three villages of Pariyaram, Elinjipra, and Kodassery. From 1962 to December 1963, the Panchayat was under the administration of a Special Officer. The first elected administrative committee assumed charge on 1 January 1964.
Even before the formation of Kodassery Panchayat, a tramway line established during the period of the Kochi Kings passed through the heart of this region. The tramway was a railway system extending up to Parambikulam, used for transporting timber, firewood, and other forest products from the eastern hills to Chalakudy.
Kodassery Panchayat is a beautiful geographical region situated between Kodassery Hill and the Western Ghats, to the east of Chalakudy Municipality. Mountain ranges form the northern and eastern boundaries of the Panchayat.
The Panchayat extends for about 20 kilometres in length, with an average width of 4.75 kilometres. It is best described as a mountain slope descending towards the south. Only a small portion of the area can be considered hilly terrain; most of the region consists of sloping plains.
Once, a major portion of these plains was devoted to paddy cultivation. There was a period when Kodassery Panchayat held a record for rice production. With the availability of water from the Chalakudy Right Bank Canal, which became operational in 1952, paddy cultivation experienced a significant boom. However, that level of agricultural activity is no longer seen today.
